Degree Programs in Art
* Art Major
The Art Major consists of 61 credit hours of course work including a wide variety of studio courses as well as courses in art history, aesthetics, and portfolio preparation. Art majors experiment with a variety of materials and techniques to encourage artistic and cognitive growth while mastering media as means of personal expression. In addition to the 48-credit Liberal Arts core requirements and required courses listed below, all art majors must complete requirements for a Minor. A Business or Marketing minor is strongly recommended to help students develop the skills they will need to channel their talents into a successful career.
* Art Minor (non-licensable)
The Art Minor consists of 21 credit hours of course work and is chosen by majors from many fields. An art minor is particularly of value to majors in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, or Communications. Students pursuing the Art Minor take a variety of studio courses and complete work in art history.
* MIAD Co-op Program for Photography Majors
* MIAD Co-op Program for Graphic Design Majors
* Interior Design Major
The Interior Design Major consists of 52 credit hours of course work completed through a cooperative program with Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC). MATC-Mequon Campus is just a 5-minute drive from Concordia and offers two unique choices to prepare students for an exciting career designing residential and commercial interiors: Interior Design Foundations and Interior Design Specializations. In addition to the 48-credit Liberal Arts core requirements (completed on the Concordia Campus) and required courses listed below, all interior design majors must complete requirements for a Minor. To develop skills necessary for the most successful career, an Art or Business minor is strongly recommended. Students selecting the Business Minor should work closely with their advisor regarding appropriate core course choices.
* Art Education Major
The Art Education Major consists of 103-109 credit hours of course work, dependent upon whether the student chooses a public school or Lutheran education focus. In both cases coursework blends studio and education courses to fully prepare students for a rewarding career in art education. Upon successful completion of all coursework, including a semester of student teaching, art education majors earn full licensure by the State of Wisconsin to teach art at the elementary and secondary levels (K-12).
Music Department
The music department finds itself at the center of the cultural, spiritual, artistic, academic and student-life aspects of university life. With major ensembles in every medium including instrumental, choral, hand-bell and contemporary Christian-the department is proud to offer a broad range of music performance opportunities. Additional opportunities are available with our annual musical theater production. These opportunities take center stage as our ensembles are called upon to perform concerts as well as official university functions. Furthermore, our touring music ensembles have gained exceptional reputations around the United States and in some parts of the world as they have been received with great acclaim wherever they perform. All conductors of these touring ensembles have great respect and reputations within their genres.
Performing ensembles, while a great strength at CUW, is only part of the picture of CUW music. Scholarly activity and applied instruction is also an enviable asset in our department. CUW offers private instruction in voice, keyboard (organ and piano) and all band/ orchestral instruments. The applied instructors on our staff, are all performing musicians in the community. Some of our part-time instructors are performers drawn from prestigious groups in the Milwaukee area such as the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Present Music.
Finally, our music degree programs offer some of the finest professional training available at a small university. With undergraduate music degree programs in:
1. Liberal Arts
2. K-12 Instrumental or Choral
3. Music Therapy Equivalency with Alverno College
4. Parish Music
5. And a graduate music program - Master of church Music (organ, choral or handbell emphasis)
One additional amenity to CUW is the close proximity to Milwaukee, a city of over 1.3 million with a rich musical and artistic environment. Professional ensembles, community ensembles, national touring acts as well as many music-making opportunities are plentiful.
