Visual Art Institute

The Visual Art Institute (VAI) was founded in 1978. Its mission is to foster the education and development of visually gifted children's talents by providing in depth training, independent study and experimentation in all aspects of visual art while preserving each child's artistic individuality and imagination. This is accomplished by understanding and accommodating a student's right brained learning style; correlating a unique, comprehensive visual art curriculum with non-directive teaching methods; and providing continuity in studies consistent with individual talents. VAI fosters award-winning art and facilitates the development of scholarship portfolios for university entrance.

The Institute offers an art curriculum for the child who loves to draw. It is a program of study designed to develop technical competence with intuitive creativity. This gives purpose and substance to technique. The development of imagination and creative thinking not only benefit those children who will eventually choose a career in the art fields, but is beneficial to all career paths. Recent studies have shown that children who study art score better on SAT's than other children and are more likely to excel in the sciences.

At VAI, students are creative colleagues. In a traditional linear, left brained teaching environment, children often feel threatened by the loss of their creative selves. Through a comprehensive art curriculum, students are provided a safe and trusting environment in which to expand their abilities and thought processes without losing their own way of seeing and expressing their respective world views. Most importantly, alumni report that their experiences at VAI have improved their ability to think and learn in all areas of education. This is the true mission of VAI.

Classroom Climate

The classroom is a highly charged creative environment and students respond to the collective positive energy of the group. This is not a play time or social hour; students are required to focus on the art that they are producing. Some of the values they must uphold include:

* Arrive on time
* Enter the classroom quietly
* Quickly get art supplies
* Show respect for other students and faculty
* Follow faculty instruction
* Participate in positive critique of their artwork and that of other students
* Students continually showing disrespect for other students will be asked to phone their parents to come and pick them up.
* Parents are asked not to go into the classrooms while students are in session. This disrupts the focus of the class.
* The faculty is responsible for instruction only.
* Administrative questions are answered in the office.
* Early release of any student must be cleared with the administrative office.
